Experiences of upgrading from Windows XP 32bit to Windows 8 Pro 64bit Software

This is the software, that I am aware of that I need to get working. One of the obvious problems that strikes you is do you have the CD, or EXE file to reinstall? Is any of this in Windows 8 as standard?

There are the following categories

  • Essential
    • What needs to be there irregardless of other applications.
      • Upgrade with latest fixes.
      • Upgrade to Windows 8.1 (See earlier section).
      • The upgrade with latest fixes again.
      • Mozilla Firefox, download latest I hope. This turns out to be Firefox24. Installed no problem. However I realised I had failed to export my bookmarks. When I went to one site it wanted to install the adobe flash player. Plus addons
        • Bookmarks export
        • AdBlockPlus 2.4
        • Evernote web clipper 5.9.0
      • Zone Alarm free firewall and anti virus, download latest I hope. Well strangely enough I plan to stick with the Windows standard software.
      • Mozilla Thunderbird, Installed V24.01, appears to work ok. Then there are the add ons
        • Evernote Tab 0.1.14
        • GContactSync 0.3.6
        • Lightning 2.6.1, requires definition of Google Calendar
        • Provider for Google Calendar 0.25
      • Rootsmagic installed 5.0.4.1 and appears to work fine.
      • GnuCash 2.4.13 (doesn’t say it works on Windows 8, last release stated is Windows 7). Appears to work OK.
      • KeePass installed 2.23. This required an import and upgrade of database format from V1 to V2.
      • Open Office, Installed V4.0.1, appears to work ok.
      • Dropbox, installed 2.4.4. Seems to work ok.
      • Adobe Acrobat reader, Windows comes with a PDF reader which I will attempt to use.
      • Evernote, download 5.0.2.1392. Works ok. Upgraded to 5.0.3.164.
      • Filezilla, 3.7.3, installs ok.
      • TrueCrypt, download 7.1a, installs ok.
      • TightVNC for managing a Raspberry Pi. , download latest I hope
      • VirtualBox-4.3.0-89960-Win, ok.
      • WinZip, or equivalent, I don’t think I have a modern copy. I wonder what will work?
      • CrashPlan, download latest I hope, do I need to do anything?
      • CutePDF 3.0, need to download PS2PDF convertor as well, works.
    • Photography
      • Photomatix Pro version 4.2.7 or later 64 bit., installed 64 bit versions of essentials and pro work fine.
      • Adobe Photoshop Elements 11, installed works fine.
      • Canon EOS Utilities, Installed from Canon EOS Digital Solution Disk V15.1, then went to Canon web site to download latest versions.
        • DPP 3.13.45.0
        • EOS Utility 2.23.25.1
        • Zoom Browser 5.8.0.74
        • Picture Style Editor 1.0.1.0
        • Image Browser 1.3.0
      • Epson Scan Utility 3.7.7.3EN works fine with Epson V500
      • photoSync, which synch a photograph folder with Flickr, download latest I hope
      • ABBY Fine Reader 10 Professional Edition, installed ok. Then you check for updates, and you have to download the complete thing, uninstall the current one and then install the new one. Which is 10.0.104.206.
      • XnConvert, V1.55 64 bit version.
    • Miscellaneous
      • GnuCash, download 2.4.13 and appears to work ok.
      • iTunes, support of iPad, download latest, then connect iPad and back it up.
    • Program development
      • Eclipse Java development environment, download latest I hope
      • MySQL, download latest I hope
  • Need to make work somehow, perhaps under virtual box
    • Canon ixus i7 support
    • Garmin Satnav support
    • JASC Paint Shop Pro Version 6.02, or if not then GIMP. Have original install CD. Installed and it works, although each time you start it up it says failed to update system registry. Just have to live with that.
    • Acronis Disk Director suite, True Image, I suspect my version is out of date. According to their web site you need: Acronis Backup & Recovery 11.5, True Image 2013 by Acronis
    • Handbrake, download latest I hope
    • Church of Latter Day Saints, Pedigree Resource File Support
    • Magic  ISO maker, download latest I hope. This says it has compatibility issues when trying to install. Will contact supplier.
    • Powerline
  • Nice to have.
    • Audacity, download latest together with Lame library and all works ok.
    • Google Chrome, download latest I hope
    • Google Desktop?
    • Ubuntu One, download latest I hope
    • PhotoMe, download latest I hope
    • Picasa, download latest I hope
    • BBC iPlayer, installed ok.
    • Facebook/Twitter
    • Microsoft Office XP Professional, have original CDs. Or have CDs for Office Basic 2003. Installed OK some Microsoft updates failed no traceable reason.
    • Dragon Naturally speaking 6, have original CDs.
    • Genealogy
      • 1851 Berkshire Census
      • Resource File Viewer (use one from US 1880 census)
      • Pedigree Viewer- download latest trial version ?
      • LDS Companion, have original install CD.
